Chewing Tobacco
August 18, 2023 / July 20, 2026 by Scott Hiland
Nestled in the heart of West Tennessee, Stoker’s tobacco has become synonymous with quality, tradition, and relentless pursuit of excellence. From humble beginnings as a family-run business, Stoker’s has risen to prominence with a reputation for fine tobaccos that tantalize the palate and satisfy even the most discerning tobacco enthusiasts. Let’s embark on a journey through time, exploring the rich history of this beloved brand.
The Stoker’s began the legacy in the early 1900s by producing and selling long-leaf tobacco. These roots grew deeper as his son and grandson (Bobby) carried on the family tradition of “peddling” tobacco. In the cold climate of Dresden, Tennessee, the founders had an epiphany: instead of peddling excess tobacco in the cold winters of Tennessee at Trade Days, why not create a mail-order business? He strategically “picked up” a few small mail-order companies that were for sale, and Stoker’s mail-order bulk tobacco business was born.
Through meticulously printed cards and envelopes stuffed by hand, Stoker’s reached people across the country, evolving into a substantial business. As the times and laws changed, so did Stoker’s, with standing orders, credit card payments, and dedicated customer service.
Stoker’s didn’t stop at mail orders. The 1940s saw the release of their most popular chewing tobacco, 24-C, a name intriguingly associated with “production costs” as Bobby puts it, with the “C” standing for “Course.” Uniquely, Stoker’s sells its chew in various packages ranging from small bags to cartons and even to 1 lb bags. Obviously, another way they can provide more value to the consumer.
A testament to Stoker’s dedication to quality is their use of 100% American-grown Tennessee tobacco, without resorting to foreign fillers. Their tobacco undergoes meticulous care: hand-cut, fire-smoked, hand-stripped, and aged for two years. This rigorous process ensures a flavor that stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Bobby Stoker, the brand’s face, whose image graces every bag and can, has been at the forefront of this success. His favorite products, Stoker’s straight and 24-C, represent the essence of what makes Stoker’s unique.
Not content with their success in chewing tobacco, Stoker’s made waves by entering the dipping market. Through a commitment to quality and innovation, they have established themselves as a household name in this sector too.
Stoker’s commitment to its roots and refusal to compromise on quality has cemented its place as a prominent name in the tobacco industry. Their approach to tobacco production, famously known as “sweating,” and their dedication to using Tennessee tobaccos make Stoker’s products a symbol of American pride and craftsmanship.
The story of Stoker’s tobacco is a tale of perseverance, innovation, and unbreakable family bonds.
